Right guard Brandon Council suffered a “severe knee injury” midway through the fourth quarter after getting both legs rolled up from behind. AU coach Gus Malzahn announced Sunday the junior will miss the rest of the season.

Redshirt freshman Keiondre Jones replaced Council in the lineup.

Council, a graduate transfer from Akron, had been one of the constants in an offensive line that spent much of preseason camp and the early part of the season searching for consistency due to COVID-19 and injury-related absences.

His versatility — he played right guard, left guard and right tackle during the first three games — allowed first-year offensive line coach Jack Bicknell Jr. to experiment with different combinations up front in order to find the best one.

“That was real tough because he’s really coming on,” Malzahn said. “He’s a super person and a really good player. That’s going to be a tough blow.”
