Finally, Florida State has a speed rusher to build around. Outside linebacker Patrick Payton, a Top150 recruit nationally per 247Sports, committed to the Seminoles on Monday.

Payton, with exceptional length at 6-foot-5, is a sack artist with excellent burst off the ball. It’s been a while since FSU had a player with Payton’s skill set to work with and develop.

Some of this is going to be contingent on how quickly Payton develops physically. If he can put on some good weight and maintain his athleticism, then he’ll play early and often in his career. Even if he doesn’t have the strength to be an every-down player right away, Payton could see a ton of playing time in pass-rush packages as a freshman given that he offers up some athleticism that FSU’s current pass rushers frankly lack.
