Three-star edge rusher Calvin Smith committed to Illinois following an official visit to campus this weekend, he announced on USA Today’s network on Thursday. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Ocoee (Fla.) native chose the Illini over 20 other scholarship offers, including Pittsburgh and Rutgers — two schools to which he took official visits earlier this month.

According to the industry-generated Composite rankings, Smith is the No. 1187 overall prospect in the Class of 2023 and the No. 96 edge rusher in the class. Illinois outside linebackers coach Kevin Kane led the Illini’s pursuit of Smith, who is the second outside linebacker to commit in the class this month, joining three-star Chicago St. Rita edge rusher Pat Farrell.

As a junior, Smith totaled 62 tackles, 29.0 tackles for loss, 10.0 sacks and 12 hurries to go along with one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one blocked punt.
