Exponential growth. That was the term Matt Campbell used to describe the progression of the offensive line unit six days into fall camp.

On a team that has returning starters at numerous positions, the offensive line room is going through a period of transition in the lead up to the 2020 season. The Cyclones lost four starters to graduation in Josh Knipfel, Bryce Meeker, Julian Good-Jones and Collin Olson. Entering this season, Iowa State has two returning contributors in Colin Newell and Trevor Downing.

Iowa State has put together two of the best recruiting classes in school history since Campbell took over in the winter of 2015. Players like Grant Treiber and Joey Ramos were coveted offensive line recruits that picked the Cyclones over offers from various powerhouse programs.

“I’ve seen exponential growth,” Campbell said during a media availability Friday. “And that doesn’t shock me because I think I knew what was waiting in the wings in terms of talent, ability and work ethic.”
