Mario Cristobal will bring his trusted defensive line coach Joe Salave’a from Oregon to Miami.
Salave’a coached with Cristobal at Oregon since 2017. When Cristobal was named head coach, Salave’a stayed with the program and added co-defensive coordinator and run-game coordinator to his title.
Salave’a coached at Washington State under Mike Leach from 2012-16. In 2011, he coached at his alma mater, Arizona, as a defensive line coach. From 2008-09, Salave’a coached at San Jose State as the defensive line coach.
He was the primary recruiter for offensive lineman Penei Sewell, who went on to be the No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Salave’a was also the primary recruiter for recent Oregon transfer entrant Jayson Jones.
At Oregon, Salave’a was the secondary recruiter on five-star recruit Kayvon Thibodeaux. He has played a part in developing Thibodeaux into a projected top ten pick in the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft.
