The Panthers finished second in the NFL in sacks last season, which was about the only thing they did right on defense. However, since then they’ve lost a ton of firepower up front. Mario Addison, Bruce Irvin, Gerald McCoy, Dontari Poe, Vernon Butler and Kyle Love have all signed with other teams.

If this defensive line unit is going to stay relevant, Carolina will need rookies like first-round pick Derrick Brown and second-rounder Yetur Gross-Matos to step up and help fill the void. The team also needs defensive coordinator Phil Snow to get creative with his personnel. Perhaps most importantly, the Panthers need a comeback year from their best lineman, defensive tackle Kawann Short.
