Rankins is hoping to return to the player he used to be, back when he was earning a reputation as an up-and-coming dominant force on the inside. He broke out with a superb season in 2018 before it all came crashing down with a devastating Achilles tear in the playoffs. He powered through the frustration of a long and difficult rehabilitation and was finally feeling a bit like his old self in 2019 before another injury setback put him on the shelf in December, ending his season.

Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen described this early 2020 version of Rankins as an “explosive and powerful” player who should bolster the team’s pass rush this season.
