On Sunday morning, one of the Trojans’ coaches found a home. It’s a familiar one and, frankly, a good fit on the raw merits.
Clay McGuire is an air raid offensive line coach. He coached at Washington State under Mike Leach, and he was brought in to coach the USC offensive line for the 2021 season. McGuire wasn’t able to engineer enough of a transformation to save Clay Helton, but it was notable that in the latter portions of the season, USC’s offensive line became better at run blocking. If McGuire had been hired before the 2019 season, the air raid might have done better at USC, but Helton was (predictably) a step or two behind.
At any rate, McGuire is reportedly returning to Washington State, where head coach Jake Dickert has made his hire at offensive coordinator and is pursuing an offensive system in which McGuire fits as the offensive line coach.
